There are currently more than 4,000 persons missing as a result of the Karabakh conflict, according to the data of the Armenian Office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

“Most of them are from Azerbaijan. There are only 800 missing in Armenia and Karabakh,” Communication Programs Director of the ICRC Yerevan Office Zara Amatuni told reporters today.

She said the ICRC Offices in Yerevan, Stepanakert and Baku are coordinating their activities on issue related to both Prisoners of War or captivated civilians.

Zara Amatuni said the issue of missing persons has a legislative gap, and the ICRC is helping the authorities to overcome the shortcoming. The draft law is ready and is expected to be adopted next year.

In Armenia, the ICRC helps mine victims, missing persons and their families, and communities living along the border with Azerbaijan. They also visit detainees held for conflict-related or security reasons, or who are otherwise vulnerable.
