On Tuesday, October 27, in light of the 100thanniversary of the Armenian Genocide, among other Italian cities and regions, the regional council of the Italian Abruzzo region also unanimously passed a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide and expressing support to the Armenian people, Hayern Aysor’s sources in Italy report.
The resolution was passed as a response to the request of the Council of the Armenian Community of Rome which, within the framework of various events organized as part of the events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, had addressed the municipal authorities of several Italian cities with a letter calling on them to pass a resolution on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide as support to the Armenia people and the numerous martyrs of the Armenian Genocide.
Luciano Monticelli, member of the Democratic Party of Italy that submitted the resolution in Abruzzo, announced the following on this occasion: “This day went down in the history of politics of our region as a beautiful day. This unanimously approved resolution affirms the maturity of the political authorities. In 1915, over 1.5 million men, women, children and elderly became the targets for the ethnic cleansing perpetrated in the Ottoman Empire, which is the first genocide of the 20th century.”
Let us add that to this day, 91 municipalities and regional councils of Italy have recognized the Armenian Genocide. The list is included in the list of Italian cities and authorities having recognized the Armenian Genocide posted on the official website of the Council of the Armenian Community of Rome (www.comunitaarmenia.it) at www.comunitaarmena.it/il-genocidio-armeno/italia-ricorda/.
