Through its Assistance to Disabled Freedom Fighters program, which was launched three years ago, Hayastan Fund’s US Western Region affiliate continues to help improve the lives of Artsakh War veterans who have physical disabilities.
The program was initiated by Hrant Tumasian of Los Angeles, a severely wounded Artsakh War veteran who is keenly aware of the difficulties faced by fellow disabled comrades in Armenia and Artsakh. With the support of fund’s US Western Region affiliate, Tumasian coordinates the purchase and transportation of various mobility aids and vehicles modified for those with disabilities due to neck, back, and other injuries.
To date, 15 specially modified vehicles, as well as a complement of mobility aids including adjustable electric beds; custom mattresses, pillows, and chairs; electric wheelchairs; portable oxygen concentrators and pumps; and other essential items have been donated to war veterans in order to help make their lives a bit easier.
“These freedom fighters, who have selflessly served our homeland, must be provided with everything they need to be independent and active, and to live with dignity,” said Sarkis Kotanjian, executive director of Hayastan Fund US Western Region affiliate, who added that the fund plans to ship several modified vehicles to Armenia and Artsakh this year.
