Armenia’s natural population growth in the first half of 2015 declined by 8.6 percent year-on-year to 4,091 people, according to Karine Kuyumjian, head of the Census and Demography Department of the National Statistical Service (NSS).
Speaking at a news conference today, Kuyumjian said the number of deaths during the reporting period decreased by 1 percent to 14,628. She added that the main causes of death in Armenia are circulatory, respiratory, and digestive diseases, as well as cancer.
According to Kuyumjian, in the first half of 2015, 18,719 babies were born, down from 19,249 in the first half of 2014.
“Thus, the number of babies born in the first 6 months of 2015 decreased by 2.8% when compared with the same period in 2014,” she said.
According to Kuyumjian, in the first five months of 2015, some 7,270 baby girls and 8,148 baby boys were born. The most popular names among newborn girls were Nare, Marie, Maria, and Anahit. The most popular boy’s names were David, Narek, Tigran, and Hayk.
Kuyumjyan also noted that some 8,582 marriages were registered in Armenia during the first half of 2015. The figure was down 10.3% from the same time span of 2014, when 9,563 marriages were registered.
According to Kuyumjian, the number of granted divorces during the reporting period decreased by 23% to 1,900, down from 2,469 in the first half 2014. She said the least number of divorces were reported in the Tavush and Gegharkunik regions.
In 2014 a total of 18,912 marriages were registered in the country, which was 3% more than in the previous year (18,363).
