Armenia is ready to restore diplomatic relations with Turkey without any preconditions, ARMENPRESS reports Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan said in an interview with the newspaper Corriere della Sera, answering the question about diplomatic relations with Ankara.
“We have said and I reiterate that we are ready to restore diplomatic relations with Turkey without any preconditions. The international recognitions of the Armenian Genocide is not a precondition for us to restore diplomatic relations with Turkey. That recognition is a very important process, which is necessary not for our relations with them, but, as I have already mentioned, for the global prevention of genocides”, PM Pashinyan said.
Nikol Pashinyan referred to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the U.S. House of Representatives, noting that it’s a very important step. Pashinyan said that it will help to prevent possible future genocides.
“Moreover, such decisions change the atmosphere in our region. Those are messages, showing that such aggressive policy will not be accepted by the international community. Unfortunately, a century after the genocide, Turkey is still perceived by Armenians as a possible security threat. It’s nearly 30 years the border with Turkey is closed on their initiative, not our. It’s open from the Armenian side”, PM Pashinyan said.
He expressed gratitude to the Chamber of Deputies of Italy for recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Nikol Pashinyan said that they work with their foreign partners to increase the number of recognitions in order to achieve an international recognition.
