Armenian Church of Diyarbakir Has Been Damaged Due To Turkish-Kurdish Clashes

The historic St. Giragos Armenian Church of Diyarbakir, which was reopened in 2011, has been damaged due to the Turkish-Kurdish clashes over the past couple of months.

As citizens of Diyarbakir told NEWS.am, the St. Giragos Armenian Church, which is located in the Suri District of Diyarbakir, has been closed for the past two months.

The clashes have damaged the windows of the church, and one can see the spots of fired bullets on the walls.s

Citizens say they don’t know how the St. Giragos Church looks like after the intensive shootings of the Turkish armed forces since stepping out to the street is still prohibited in the Suri District.

Let us mention that the St. Giragos Church, which is one of the largest churches in the Near East, was reopened and consecrated on October 22, 2011, and the first Holy Mass was served on October 23.

The repair works in the St. Giragos Church were carried out with the support of the Armenians of Diyarbakir and Diyarbakir Municipality.

The St. Giragos Church has been reopened as an operating church.
