Discussion of United Nations’ new agenda set for period following 2015 afoot in Armenia

The United Nations’ new agenda set for a period after 2015 are being discussed now in Armenia at a conference focused on development of administrative potential for sustainable development.
David Harutyunyan, the minister-head of the government’s administration, speaking today at the conference, said that Armenia is always taking part in implementation of all the conceptual initiatives of the United Nations Organization and has been among the first countries to embark on implementation of the sustainable development principles adopted in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and the millennium development goals set in 2000.
“The results produced on some of the goals show certain progress, but we, like many other countries, still have plenty to do, and we attach importance to further work under the UN new agenda for a period following 2015 and hope that it will allow to create more favorable environment for life activities in Armenia and all over the world,” he said.
Harutyunyan said that the new agenda is more ambitious than the previous ones. It consists of two conceptual programs with special emphasis on the implementation component.
In his words, there are 10 to 17 goals and more than 150 objectives in the program. They need to be discussed over one year and shape into a final document.
“As a representative of the government, I can say that the administrative ability, accountability and transparency are the key components for implementation of any program, and the conference will make it possible to identify new goals for a period after 2015 and to find new ways for effective administration, which, I hope, will become an inseparable part of the UN new program for a period following 2015,” he said.
The international conference, which will last until October 10, is being attended by representatives of governing institutions and scientific organizations from a dozen countries.
Issues related to sustainable development, education and environment are being discussed here.
The event is organized by the Armenian government and the UN economy and social affairs department and the UN Development Program.
